(Above)  Properly configured Lucent USS-344 PCI USB Open Host Controller.

Note The Lucent USS-344, (Belkin QuadraPort & ADS TurboQuad installs (4) Host Controllers and (4) Root Hubs in addition to the onboard USB Host and Root Hub.

General Rules

In addition to the Host Controller a USB Root Hub must also appear in the Device Manager.

A missing or flagged USB Root Hub in the Device Manager indicates BIOS problems, host controller problems or an IRQ conflict.

(1) USB Host Controller / 1 Root Hub

(2) USB Host Controllers / 2 Root Hubs

Corrective Measures include:

Win98       BIOS Update, Resolve the IRQ Conflict and/or Correct the Effected BIOS Setting.

Win95 B & C   BIOS Update,  Installation of the Win95 USB update file and/or IRQ Conflict.  PCI to USB Upgrade Cards are not supported in any Win95 OS.

Win2000   Enable (Assign IRQ for USB), Resolve the IRQ Conflict and/ or Update the BIOS

(Above)  Properly Installed OPTi Firelink 82C861 USB PCI USB Host Controller and Root Hub on a FIC 503+ Motherboard, Win98SE OS.  Note that the VIA controller should NOT be disabled and the VIA USB Filter Driver MUST be installed.

(Above) Properly Installed Intel 82801 BA/BAM, both host controllers and a Belkin QuadraPort, (Lucent QuadraBus), PCI/USB card installed.  Motherboards with two USB host controllers show both USB host controllers in the Device Manager even if the second USB host controller is not physically connected.

Note  The example screen shots show the presence of other USB Devices and Hubs which may or may not be present on your system.  A simple USB system has (1) Root Hub and (1) USB Host Controller.  Yellow or Red exclamation marks next to a device indicates a problem.  A Green Question mark (Me only), indicates that the drivers need to be reinstalled.  Win95 does NOT support USB to PCI Upgrade cards.
