Ali USB Host Controller Troubleshooting v1.1

The Ali USB host controller can be difficult to configure.  Ali hosts have a documented history for failure with scanners, cameras and other sophisticated USB devices.  There are no patches for this host other than those issued by Microsoft.  USB problems on ALi motherboards can often be traced to aggressive BIOS settings.  Start by returning the BIOS setup to System Default Values and make necessary personal adjustments for AGP, Sound and Drives.  Set the FSB (Front Sound Bus) to Default.  Overclocking can produce serious, negative effects.  Return RAM settings to Default or Normal.

Before you start:

  • Read through the entire Guide before you start.
  • Print this page for reference.
  • Uninstall the software for USB devices using the software uninstaller or Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs function, remove all USB Devices except for USB keyboard and/or mouse before you try any of the suggestions.
  • Backup your Data

Overclocking

Overclocking advances the PCI bus beyond 33Mhz the resulting increased (odd) values can adversely effect the operation of the Universal Serial Bus.  Return the FSB (Front Side Bus) to default values before you do anything else.

M5237 Open Host Controller Interface

ALi (OHCI) USB controller. This problem is caused by an interaction between the Acer Laboratories Inc. USB chip set and certain motherboard design elements. Under certain PCI bus signaling conditions, the Acer Laboratories USB controller may produce damaged USB packets that could be misinterpreted by USB devices as different packet types. This behavior is dependent on motherboard design, and because of this, does not occur on all computers that use Acer Laboratories Inc. USB controllers.  Install a PCI/USB card as a work around for the problematic onboard USB Host.

BIOS

Updating the BIOS is the first step in the troubleshooting process.

Last Resort / Often the Best Option

If you are still unable to initialize USB and if the USB IRQ is free, IRQ Steering is enabled and the BIOS has Enabled USB support, a PCI/USB upgrade card is the solution.

USBMan tested and approved USB Upgrade Cards listed by chipset type and manufacturer can be found in (USB Problem Guide).
