Microsoft Intellimouse with IntelliEye

Another Light Mouse from Microsoft

by Jeffery Roberts – Senior Hardware Editor

With the introduction of the Explorer Mouse Pro, Microsoft single-handedly revolutionized the mouse.  Tracking at the speed of light has replaced the conventional roller ball in several of Microsoft’s basic input devices.   The Intellimouse with IntelliEye is another of these mice.

The difference between the Microsoft Intellimouse with IntelliEye and the Microsoft Explorer Pro are pretty obvious.   Fewer Buttons, smaller size, different color and a distinct resemblance to the basic Intellimouse are the differences you can see.  Sometimes appearances can be deceiving and any similarity between this mouse and Microsoft’s basic PS/2 /Serial Port Intellimouse version is strictly cosmetic.   Unlike the conventional, roller ball version Intellimouse, this new mouse is smooth and fluid.  A slight push moves the mouse easily across the desktop.  The buttons are firm, yet very responsive and the scrolling wheel performs well.   This is a very good two button, scrolling wheel mouse with the advantage of Microsoft’s exclusive light tracking mechanism.   The Intellimouse with IntelliEye is both PS/2 and USB mode capable.   With the new Intellipoint software installed the mouse worked flawlessly with Intel, OPTi, Lucent and AMD USB host controllers.  As a good all around mouse the Intellimouse with IntelliEye is an excellent choice.   A recent price reduction makes this mouse an exceptional value.  The Intellipoint software is a bonus.  The Intellimouse with IntelliEye was tested with the following Operating Systems:

  • Win2000 - Fully Compatible

  • Win98SE - Fully Compatible

  • Win98 - Fully Compatible

Note:  This mouse, like all Microsoft pointing devices I have tested, was a little flaky with VIA/USB, (FIC VA-503+).  The workaround is PS/2 mode or an approved USB upgrade card.
