Alternatives

Many USB 2.0 card manufacturers have developed USB 2.0 drivers for Win98 SE, ME and Win2000.

Although, all PCI/USB cards are currently using the same NEC µPD720120GC-9EU, the drivers are by and large proprietary and only function with the branded USB2.0/PCI card that the drivers are written for.  In other words, the drivers obtained from Keyspan will NOT work with an  Adaptec card and vice versa.

If you plan to use USB 2.0 with Windows 98SE and ME and your older motherboard, your only option is to purchase a card from a manufacturer that supplies the drivers for your OS.

Adaptec USB 2.0 Drivers Version 3.0

Updated USB 2.0 Drivers for Adaptec devices are available for download at the Adaptec web site.  Read the installation instructions for your Operating System.

Linux

Linus Torvalds, creator and head of the Linux operating-system project, released the 2.5.2 Kernel on Monday, January 14, 2002.  The new 2.5.2 software core, in addition to other improvements, contains support for USB High-Speed (USB 2.0).  If you know what all this means, you likely don't need a lengthy explanation of the purpose and use of the new kernel.  Additional information and links can be found on the Linux USB page.

The Logo

 The new USB 2.0 logo

The new logo can only be displayed on products that have passed USB-IF certification testing.

Why buy Certified?  High Speed Certification means the device has demonstrated compliance and function in accordance with the USB 2.0 standard.  It also means the maker was willing to pay the money and take the time to have his device tested and approved.  With literally every small village in China making USB devices these days, it's easy to be fooled by the lower priced, look alike, knock offs that proliferate the market place. There's a lot of junk out there.  The difference between the good and the rest is usually only a couple of dollars.

USB 2.0 Background

  • To further increase I/O bandwidth and the range of peripheral applications, the USB 2.0 Promoter Group - lead by Intel and six other high profile companies, has raised the target speed to 480 Mbps, which is 40 times faster than USB 1.1.

  • With the increased bandwidth, a broader range of PC peripheral applications can take advantage of the benefits of USB. These peripherals include high-end networking devices, digital video cameras, next generation scanners, high-end printers, and fast storage devices. In many cases, USB 2.0 can replace SCSI connections.

  • The USB 2.0 specification is expected for final release by early year 2000. Leading chipset manufacturers, will have silicon by the second quarter of 2000. Leading system and peripheral manufacturers are planning to introduce USB 2.0 products in the last quarter of 2000. All USB 1.1 systems and peripherals are expected to co-exist with those of the new USB 2.0.

  • The major highlights of USB 2.0

  • 480 Mbps

  • Fully backward compatible with USB 1.1 systems and peripherals

  • Minimal cost difference between USB 2.0 and 1.1

  • Compatible with existing cables and connectors
