  • Win Service Pack 4 Released

Service Pack 4 includes various security and compatibility fixes.  Service Pack 4 includes Support for USB 2.0 and wireless Internet connections.

  • Microsoft USB 2.0 Drivers for Win 2000

Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 contains the Microsoft drivers for USB 2.0.  Upgrade to Service Pack 4 before installing a new USB 2.0 Host adapter.  The stand alone USB 2.0 drivers have been pulled from the Microsoft Windows Update Site and Corporate Download Site.

The Most Common USB Problems

  • Bios Compatibility

  • ACPI may NOT be compatible with your hardware.

    • ACPI automatically installs if your system BIOS date is 1-1-1999.

    • ACPI was specifically developed for Portable Computers that require sophisticated power management to conserve battery power.  Desktop computers do NOT require ACPI and often perform better in APM mode.  APM mode allows the user greater control over IRQ assignments, ACPI does not.

  • Computer Model Setting

    • Except for systems with dual processors the computer should be set to Standard PC HAL (Hardware Abstraction Layer) if Windows2000 is stacking all the IRQs on one interrupt request.  Dual Proc Systems should use Standard Multi Proc HAL.  If your computer has several devices stacked on one IRQ (usually IRQ 9), then ACPI is likely active in the BIOS and your system is NOT configured as a Standard PC.  Click on the Computer in Device Manager to check your HAL status.

    • The optimum method to change from an ACPI HAL to a Standard HAL is to re-install Windows 2000 as an upgrade (reinstall the OS), depress the  F5 key during hardware detection setup and choose Standard PC (non ACPI).  Use the Repair > Fast Repair Method.

    • Before reinstalling the OS, boot to BIOS,

      • Disable PnP OS

      • Disable BIOS control of Power Management

      • Enable USB Keyboard

      • Enable Assign IRQ for USB (if this option is available)

    • Note:

    • Note:

    • Note:

      • An ATX protocol PC will not shut down automatically after you change the HAL to APM.  To achieve Auto Shut Down

        • Open Device Manager

        • Show Hidden Devices

        • NT APM / Legacy Support will have a Red !

        • Enable NT APM / Legacy Support

        • Reboot

        • The computer will shut down automatically the next time you turn your system off.

  • USB is sharing its IRQ

    • USB does NOT like to share its IRQ with another device see Computer Model Setting above.

  • USB Enabled in the BIOS

    • All Legacy USB Devices MUST be Enabled in the BIOS

  • USB DOS Function

    • Enabling USB Dos Function on some older Ali and SiS motherboards will cause USB to fail

  • Assign IRQ for USB in the BIOS

    • Must be ENABLED in the BIOS if that option is available
