: Just a note to post a fix for others with the same problem. On a laptop with no physical serial port - USB ports only. (So therefore there was never a need to load the Win2000 serial device drivers.)

: Omega USR-2309 Serial - USB adapter.
: You'll find you can install the device and drivers but then the adapter will fail to funtion. Programs indicate the port is locked by another program , etc.
: After hours of battling I found that you'll need to manually install a FALSE COM port prior to installing the USB-Serial adapter driver. You'll then have a Yellow Exclamation beside the FALSE COM port you manually install - but your USB-Serial adapter will now work.
: Now to fix the dent in the wall were I was banging my head......
