Check for an IRQ sharing violation. USB doesn't like to share its IRQ. If USB is sharing free some IRQs in the BIOS, i.e. COM1 and Com2 can be disabled, then clean up the Device manager in Safe Mode. There is a guide in the USB Problem Solver that will take you step by step through the cleanup. Link at top of page or on any main web page.

It has an Abit sa6r motherboard with an Intel 815 chipset, 82815/EG/EP memory controller huh, 82801BA(ICH2)I/O controller hub running Win98se. The scanner drivers are the latest and i've flashed the bios with the latest upgrade.Windows will only recognise an unknown USB device and no ammount of uninstalling and reinstalling wil get me any further forward. Onboard USB is enabled in the BIOS.
