: No external drive (other than SCSI) that I know of can work in DOS. FDISK will work, however, in a DOS window in Windows. Partition Magic will work in Windows as long as you don't have active programs or part of the OS installed to the drive in question. These drives are for storage only - no operating systems.
: Best practice is to image to an internal IDE drive and then move to image to the external drive. The trouble with this is that you can't restore the image without booting into Windows.
: What I do is use a drive caddy or mobile bay to store my backups. I then slide out the drive for portabilty.

: : Hello,
: : I have a Maxtor 40GB External USB Hard Drive & Adaptec DuoConnect USB/Firewire PCI card (both support usb2.0). Every backup program, partition program or ghosting program has to switch to Dos to complete their operations, but none of them can recognize a usb or firewire device (My Maxtor). Even fdisk can't see the USB drive. Is there now or will there ever be such a driver to make USB/Firewire devices visible in DOS. I use a duel boot with Win98se & XP Pro.
