My self-built pc (VIA Apollo chipset and Windows XP Pro on one partition, ME on the other) has used an HP USB printer okay for ages.

This week I am trying to get ADSL up and running. My machine will not detect the Fujitsu FDX310 modem on either USB port on either operating system. The HP printer works fine on both ports on both o/s's. The FDX310 modem works fine on another computer. But I can't detect the modem on my computer.

I've tried device manager troubleshooting in safe mode, new VIA drivers, VIA filter driver (but that didn't work: message "can't change original INF file"), all to no avail.

Is it time to buy a USB hub? I'm assuming the problem could be power on the USB port.
