Bill,

"Unknown device" means that the device failed enumeration for some reason (for everyone, enumeration means the process in which the operating system queries the device for information to determine which software to load).

: Honestly, the single best think that you can do is install an operating system that doesn't crash. Windows 2000 and Windows XP qualify.

: Besides that, unplug the X63, remove the software ih Control Panel > Add/Remove Software and restart -- installing again according to Lexmark instructions.

: : This computer is used in a small business office and the office manager bought a Lexmark X63 combo printer for us to use on our HP Pavilion. Everytime the computer crashes we loose the printer to an UNKNOWN DEVICE in the USB device and I can't reinstall the printer. We've updated the USB device several times and I have alwys had my husband who knows more about computers thatn I do help so NOw I don't have his assitance ready at hand and I need my printer and I have no Idea of how to fix this reoccuring problem.
