I doubt it's the motherboard, but what the heck? Take it. Let me ask you once more...is USB 2.0 on a card or built-in?
: UPDATE: Just got off the phone with Dell Support for the 12th time. They said they went through every possible solution they could think of so they are sending out a new motherboard. They also mentioned that this was the first problem like this they have encountered. Thanks Bill and Jeff for helping - sorry I had to bother you guys with a problem that looks like it is a freak hardware issue.
: : I must assume that the card is defective, Mark. I have never seen a USB 2.0 card that was this stubborn.

: : : It says the Legacy Support for USB is enabled in the BIOS. Anything else I can do?: Um...the USB 2.0 controller is not showing, Mark. Try moving it to another slot if it's a card or enabling it in BIOS if it's built-in.: Bill: : The controller types are:: : Intel 82801BA/BAM USB Universal Host Controller - 2442: : Intel 82801BA/BAM USB Universal Host Controller - 2444: : : Is this onboard USB or a PCI/USB 2.0 card?: : : If onboard what host controller type is showing in the Device manager?: : : Jeff Roberts: : : USBMan: : : : : : : yeah: : : : : : : : : Did you go to Windows Update and download and install the WinXP USB 2.0 drivers?: : : : : Jeff Roberts: : : : : USBMan: : : : : : Ok, I am running Windows XP Home with 4 USB 2.0 ports. My problem is that it lists 2 USB controllers and 2 USB Hubs in the Device Manager but also 1 Unknown Device. No matter what USB device I connect to the computer, it detects an "Unknown Device." I tried everything that Dell tech support suggested and finally I formatted and reinstalled Windows XP but the same thing happened. The only thing I could think of was that the system was attached to a cable line that was struck by lightning and it did something to the hardware. However, again - 2 USB controllers and 2 USB hubs show up in the device manager and it doesn't matter which of the 4 ports I use. I am one setp away of replacing the motherboard which I really don't want to do since Dell won't cover it as they claim it was caused by an "Act of God." The computer is just a couple weeks old. Any suggestions?
