Intel i440BX chipset ( generally good usb support ) in this Portege. Try a bios update. Did Windows install ACPI support(check the device manager=> system devices)?

: : : Toshiba Portege laptop, Win 98 SE, latest Intellimouse drivers, brand new USB Intellimouse Optical.

: : : The light(s) on the mouse shut down like clockwork, even if the mouse is in use. Only rebooting restores operation.

: : : I tried altering the BIOS legacy USB setting, and shut off certain power save functions (this is a laptop though - APM is needed) - no luck.

: : : Any ideas? I scoured the web and only found obscure references to the light(s) shutting down in the event of a crash. No crashes here.
