If you want USB 2.0 you really need to update your OS. Service Pack 1 for Windows 98 provides updated USB files for Win98 First Edition. However, First Edition was Microsoft's initial attempt at an OS that fully supported USB. It's somewhat crude by todays standards and likely will not perform well in this situation. Keep in mind that the Operating System is an integral part of the USB function.
: Hi Folks,
: I have Win 98 and a desperate need for additional
: drive space. I have decided on a maxtor 3000 40gb,
: usb 2.0.
: My question: the info for the drive does not list
: win 98 as a supported operating system, I assume
: that is just for the 2.0 as it says it is backward
: compatible with 1.1?
: I am purchasing a pci 2.0 maxtor card with the drive
: which also says it is backward compatible (my two
: existing usb ports are occupied). Will the drive work if plugged into the 2.0 card (albeit at the 1.1 speed)?
: What exact files does Win 98 SE have that I would need to get in order to utilize the 2.0 standard?
: Thank You,
