Good point. I see that a lot, Jason. Since I saw no brand-name system components, I couldn't be sure. If it's an AMD CPU, all bets are off.

: I wonder why the USB is listed as "Standard Universal....". Isn't a intel chipset in this mobo?
: Try to install the intel chipset drivers ( http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts-df/Support_Intel.asp# )

: : Compaq's Answer ("We gurarantee nothing"):

: : Dear Robert,

: : Thank you for contacting Compaq E-Support, a part of the new HP.

: : I infer that you are unable to use the scanner with the Notebook.

: : We do not have test data for the installation and use of third party
: : hardware in the system and Compaq does not guarantee the accuracy of the
: : third party contact information. Your best option would be to consult
: : with the manufacturer of the product you wish to install and determine
: : compatibility with the system. Be sure to match the hardware you intend
: : to acquire with the requirements and capability of the system.

: : Again, thanks for contacting us.

: : Regards,

: : : : You're giving me credit where it isn't due I just use the services of SpamCop for my email. On the other hand, you might have heard of me in the ShareWare world --- but that was a long time ago, now...

: : : Geez....don't I feel like a dope! LOL!

: : : Anyway, we have a problem here, Houston. You are using an ACPI "HAL" for on laptop for good reason - power management. Laptop power management is a critical isse, obviously. Unfortunately, that ACPI HAL is causing massive IRQ-sharing, which USB 1.1 ports do not like. I'm not sure that we could undo the sharing anyway because moden laptops have the USB, VAG and sound subsystems hard-wired together.

: : : I would suggest a "ROM" (BIOS) update from Compaq. I would also recommend contacting them about this. They may be aware of a problem and have a fix for you. Tell them USBMan sent you. ;-)

: : : Bill

: : : : In any case, I don't see anything obvious in the IRQs:

: : : : IRQ 0 System timer OK
: : : : IRQ 1 Compaq Easy Access Internet Keyboard OK
: : : : IRQ 4 Communications Port (COM1) OK
: : : : IRQ 5 Intel(R) 82801CA/CAM SMBus Controller - 2483 OK
: : : : IRQ 6 Standard floppy disk controller OK
: : : : IRQ 8 System CMOS/real time clock OK
: : : : IRQ 9 Microsoft ACPI-Compliant System OK
: : : : IRQ 9 Mobility Radeon OK
: : : : IRQ 9 Standard Universal PCI to USB Host Controller OK
: : : : IRQ 9 Standard Universal PCI to USB Host Controller OK
: : : : IRQ 9 Conexant HSFi V92 MiniPCI Modem OK
: : : : IRQ 9 Texas Instruments OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller OK
: : : : IRQ 9 Texas Instruments PCI-1410 CardBus Controller OK
: : : : IRQ 9 Intel(R) PRO/100 VE Network Connection OK
: : : : IRQ 9 SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio OK
: : : : IRQ 12 Synaptics PS/2 Port TouchPad OK
: : : : IRQ 13 Numeric data processor OK
: : : : IRQ 14 Primary IDE Channel OK
: : : : IRQ 15 Secondary IDE Channel OK

: : : : Thank you for your help....

: : : : : Let me start by saying THANKS, Bob. I am a user of your services and recommend SPAMCOP regularly. You provide a wonderful and necessary service. Kudos!

: : : : : Laptops can be a pain because the USB subsection is usually hard-wired to the VGA and sound subsystems. This sometimes causes IRQ-sharing which USB 1.0 controllers don't like. Open System Information (MSINFO32.EXE) and navigate to Hardware Resources > IRQs. Click anywhere in the right pane and then press CTRL-A and then CTRL-C. You have copied that data to the clipboard. Paste that data in a reply here.

: : : : : Once I have that data, I can formulate an attack plan.

: : : : : Bill

: : : : : : I purchased a CannonScan n670u to use on the road with my Compaq (XP personal) notebook. The major attraction of the Cannon scanner was its portability --- it is small, has a lock down cover, and is powered thru the USB port.

: : : : : : The scanner works fine with my (older) Compaq desktop.

: : : : : : During install on the notebook, it was recognized correctly when I booted with it attached, and loaded all the software.

: : : : : : When I try to use it, I'm getting the message now that it is not attached. I strongly suspect that the feature of being powered by the USB port & using it with a notebook may be the root of the problem (but the scanner sure looks like it was meant to be part of a traveling pair).

: : : : : : I've been unable to find any information at all about the compatability of this particular pair.

: : : : : : Anyone have any information on this combination?

: : : : : : Thank you.
