Subject:   external CDRW/DVD drive disconnects while read/write

This Freecom protable CDRW/DVD combo Drive unit comes with USB cable adaptor with green and red LED indicators. Green = working. Red = peak transfer. When the red light comes on the unit disconnects itself from what ever PC it is attached to. Have same result with controller versions USB1.1 and USB2, on several PC's running Win 98 and Win 2000 prof.
Any thoughts anybody please?
