If another reader works without failure, why would you want to pursue this? It's obviously a device problem.
My best guess is that the PC/motherboard needs to be shut off longer. The capacitors on the motherboard need to drain of residual charge. This may require opening the circuit in an ATX board because the board is always powered.
: To present the problem in most simple way, this could be a problem... I have trouble installing USB smart card reader (it is a SCMMicro SCR301 device (more specifically ActivCard SRR200, P/N: ZFG-9800-AB) on computer which is based on Microstar MS-6337LE5 motherboard. Windows 98 SE (localized version, Slovenian) is used as operating system. The trouble is this; I installed drivers first and plugged USB device when this was required by installation. The device was correctly recognised and drivers were installer. Reboot was required so I did so. Everything worked perfectly.. But after shutdown or restart USB reader sometimes does not work (it has LED indicator which stays on when device is under power or blinks if it is communicating with smart card). Rule was, when computer was performing POST, LED on device should lit and stay on for some time, then turn off and again turn on when Windows initialized a driver. If this was so, device worked perfectly. On the other hand, if LED did not turn on when computer performed POST, device did not work and LED did not turn on when Windows should initialized driver (device was then not shown in Device Manager). If I replugged the device into other USB slot (same USB hub, only one hub is connected, motherboard has two hubs), the LED came on but the device did not work and Windows did not recognize plugged in device. I tried following:
: - upgrade motherboard BIOS with latest version | no change
: - change BIOS parameters (USB keyboard support OFF, USB mouse support OFF, PnP OS NO,Resources AUTO) | no change
: - installed latest chipset drivers | no change
: - tried different drivers for USB reader (on first look there was no change in USB driver for Win9x platform in newer version)
: - tried Omnikey USB reader | works in every case, even if it does not get power during POST
: Trouble is, this computer is not on my location so I have to pick some ideas first before attending the problem. I guess I can still try following:
: - disable power management (it is ACPI enabled system)
: - install different OS
: - inspect device initialization order (seems like USB PnP is not working perfectly)
: Does anybody have idea what could be wrong? Maybe bad capacitor on mobo?
: Thanks in advance for any info...
