I have a 3COM camera and a P4 with onboard USB 2.0 and mine works fine with the original cable.
As to why..your guess is as good as anyone's.

: My 3COM Homeconnect camera worked fine with my Pentium 2 Windows 2000 system with the USB1 cable that came with the camera but one day my motherboard reached end of life. So now I got a brand new machine with Pentium 4 2.26 GHz CPU with many other bells and whistles but still running Windows 2000. However, when I attach the same camera with the same cable I consistently get "device not found... check to see device is properly connected" message - even after re-installing the driver several times. Then I replaced the USB 1 cable with a new USB2 cable and walah everything works fine. Just to make sure I took the old USB 1 cable and attached it to another USB device on another computer and everything is fine there, so I know that the old USB 1 cable did not go bad. So what is going on here? Why is the old camera that used to work with USB1 cable on my old PC now requires USB2 cable on the new PC?
