I know people are probably sick of hearing about troubles with the Alcatel Speedtouch USB modem and VIA chipsets, but for the record, here is my tale of woe in the hope that somone may have anything to offer... I have tried...flashing the BIOS...installing VIA 4in1 drivers...upgrading the modem drivers to v1.6...removing practically all my devices in safe mode...basically everything recommended on this site. What happens is that when I plug the modem in, it is seen by Windows, gets installed (seemingly successfully), but then my PC starts to run like a dog. There is no trace of the modem in Device Manager - however, if I boot into safe mode then I can see it in Device Manager. The USB port is not sharing an IRQ with any other device. When I try to double-click the Alcatel icon on my desktop, I get a message saying Could not create entry ("" + Alcatel Speedtouch Connection + ""). Do I need any network protocols/adapters installed to get the modem to install. (Wouldn't have thought so). Is there anything else I could try or should I just invest in another modem. I'm running: 1800+ Athlon XP Gigabyte GA-7VTXH m/b 512 MB DDR RAM Windows 98SE Host Controller is VIA 3038Cheers for any help...
