Subject:   USB shuts down other port

Message Posted

Hi,

I've been having a lot of trouble with my USB ports lately. Well, I'll start from the beginning.
I've been using an USB mouse with one of the USB ports since I got this computer (it has 2 USB ports) last year. Two months ago, I decided to buy a digital camera and that's when the problems started. Every time I tried to download my pictures through one of the USB ports, the other would shut down (the mouse would stop working). After many weeks of trying to resolve the problem, I just decided to stop trying and get a PS2 mouse.
A month later I bought a new printer, which is also USB. Same problem with the printer. So I went to best buy and bought an USB hub (self-powered), so this way I would plug all my USB devices on only one port.
Well, to my surprise this solution did not work either. Now every time I connect my digital camera, my printer, or my PDA (they are all new) to the hub, it stops working (which, I assume, is due to the fact that now both USB ports are being shut down).
Now, I've tried everything to make it work, I've reinstalled everything, the drivers, the software. I have two operating systems running in this computer (Win98 & Win2k) and it happens to both. Because of this, I assume it's a hardware (or BIOS) issue.
Now, here are two things that I find very strange:

- When I try to connect and "older" USB device, like an old PDA that I have, or the USB mouse, they both work properly. However, when I try to connect a "newer" device, like the digital camera or the printer, the problems start.

- Recently I was trying to connect my PDA to the USB hub and got the following message: "An unknown device has exceeded the current limits of its hub port."

Here are my machine's SPECS:

- AMD Duron 750MHZ on a FIC AZ11 MB (Via KT133 chipset)
- 128MB SDRAM
- Belkin USB Hub, 4 ports, self-powered.
- OS: Win2k SP3

Any kind of help muchly appreciated!
