You would need a USB 2.0 adapter card and it still wouldn't out-perform Firewire. Use the Firewire port. ;)

: I have a 2 yr old Gateway notebook running Win 98 SE. I need to purchase an external CD-RW to use with it. The Device manager shows me that I have both a IEEE1394 bus controller (Texas Instruments OHCI compliant IEEE1394 Host Controller) and USB Controller (Intel 82371AB/EB PCI to USB Universal Host Controller and a USB Root Hub). Since it is two years old, the USB has to be 1.1 compliant.

: So am I right in assuming that I can run both Firewire or USB 2.0 CD-RW with my notebook ? What kind of additional hardware would I require in either case ?

: Would like recommendations as to whether I should go for Firewire or upgrade to USB 2.0 and use a USB 2.0 CD-RW.

: Which option is cheaper and which would give me higher performance, i.e. better cd writing speeds ?
