hey all, looking for some help! i just bought a new usb modem to replace my serial modem...it installed without issue, but hogs the cpu like crazy! if i start a file downloading, my cpu usage is proportionate to how fast the file is downloading...eg if it is downloading at 4k/sec cpu usage will be about 80% and if it is maxing out at 5.5k/sec then the cpu is on 100%! i am not running any other programs, and i verified that it is indeed the modem..the process 'svchost.exe' is responsible, after connecting its mem usage goes up to and stays around 20 megs, and as soon as i shut down that prog cpu usage goes back to zero (and the internet connection goes dead) does anyone have any ideas, this is baffling! I am using Windows XP with an asus a7v333 mobo with a VIA USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller Could this extra usage be caused by irq conflicts at all? i'm considering reformatting, when i do that is it best to have all usb devices plugged in when doing a clean install of windows, or better to install with no usb devices and then add them one by one with reboots in between?thanks for help on this! dan
