Hmmm...I missed the Debian mention. Does the distribution you're using support booting from USB?

: PC's simple freeze when they access the USB-HDD if "USB-HDD" is selected as bootdevice.

: The failure is in the USB-CASE chip if an BIOS access it. If I haven't any bootsector on the usb-hdd the pc's will freeze too.
