ehm,

I already said the bootmanager LILO isn't shown,
bootmanager are independent on controller access while loading the bootmanager code. There are some usb-keys on the market that can boot DOS too.

I mailed the support of Datafab and their MD2-USB isn't bootable. Also they said their is no driver for linux, but I use it with "usb-storage.o".
(It's an firmware issue, if you have problems, try google with "datafab linux")

: Hmmm...I missed the Debian mention. Does the distribution you're using support booting from USB?
