Subject:   Problem Fixed, but another question

Message Posted

--I fixed it.. I did try the ACPI thing, but no effect.. as it turned out I had to run "wdreg" (they wrote the drivers with Jungo windriver) and it seemed to fix the problem. Of course that's completely undocumented as far as I can tell. Anyway I have another somewhat unrelated question. I have two systems with front USB ports that work fine with a USB mouse, but when you plug in something else like a digital camera, it pops up as "Unknown Device" (if you use the rear ports it is detected properly). Is this a result of poor signal integrity or something? Two different case/mobo combos are demonstrating that behavior. Would it help to connect the "shield" wire to GND somewhere on the motherboard? Thanks for your help.-Tiak: Look in Device Manager under "Computer". If it's ACPI, let's change it to "Standard PC":: 1. Reinstall Windows 2000 from within Win2K (run Setup on the CD) and (on reboot) press F5 when you see "Setup is inspecting hardware..." and select the Standard PC HAL when prompted. Continue by using the Repair > Fast Repair (no Recovery Console and no Emergency Repair Disk) method. This is the technique I recommend.: 2. An easier, but less sure fix is to change the driver for "Computer" in Device Manager to Standard PC and restart. Go to the Driver tab and click Update driver > Next> Display a list...> Show all...> Standard PC. Although this technique works for me, I have heard of systems that will not restart when it's used. A word to the wise...: Afterward, go to Control Panel > Power Options > APM and enable APM.: Bill: : --I have a pogo RipFlash Plus mp3 player with a USB interface. I've tried using it on a couple of different machines, as follows:: : Abit BH6 / Celeron 300a (Win98SE) : works fine: : Asus CUSL2-C / PIII-933 (Win2000) : doesn't work (see below): : Intel d815efv / PIII-933 (Win2000) : works fine: : Intel d845pesv / P4-2.4 (Win2000) : doesn't work (see below): : On the machines that it doesn't work, I can install the drivers and it shows up fine in the device manager, but when I try to use the mp3 manager software, the application hangs and I can't kill it (though the rest of the system still responds). At first I thought it might be a Win2k thing, but it seems fine on the Intel 815 mobo, using win2k. The only other thing I can think of is the USB irq sharing problem with ACPI. Could that cause the behavior I'm seeing? Also, if this is the case, why do some USB devices have this issue while others don't have a problem? Is it just a crappy driver?: : Looking forward to your response,: : -Tiak
