You may just need updated drivers for the reader. If that doesn't help, you'll need MIS to do this for you:

Look in Device Manager under "Computer". If it's ACPI, let's change it to "Standard PC":

1. Reinstall Windows 2000 from within Win2K (run Setup on the CD) and (on reboot) press F5 when you see "Setup is inspecting hardware..." and select the Standard PC HAL when prompted. Continue by using the Repair > Fast Repair (no Recovery Console and no Emergency Repair Disk) method. This is the technique I recommend.

2. An easier, but less sure fix is to change the driver for "Computer" in Device Manager to Standard PC and restart. Go to the Driver tab and click Update driver > Next> Display a list...> Show all...> Standard PC. Although this technique works for me, I have heard of systems that will not restart when it's used. A word to the wise...

Afterward, go to Control Panel > Power Options > APM and enable APM.

: Bill...I understand it was a new image. Tks.

: : Did they upgrade NT or load a new image?

: : : Our MIS folks recently installed Win2K Pro on my pc, which replaced NT 4.0, in order to provide usb support for digital camera work. When I plug in my Sandisk reader, I don't get a msg back that the pc recognizes a new hdware dev, etc. If I go to Explorer, I do see a new "f" drive created. I click on "f", msg is to insert disk..when I insert the camera's memory card, I get a msg back that I have UNPLUGGED a mass storage device and all sorts of dire msgs. That msg will keep repeating until I click "ok." Now, the card reader works fine on 3 other pc's with Win2K Pro. We had previously installed Kodak and Sandisk software on my pc, which might have been a mistake. Never did get the Kodak software to install properly.
: : : All my checks with Device Mgr, etc., says all is well.
: : : MS ACPI & Intel (R) 82801BA/BAM SMBus Controller are on IRQ9. Intel (R) 82801BA/BAM USB Univ Host Controller -2442 is on IRQ19..not shared.
: : : I think the MIS boys are afraid they will have to remirror this pc...hard to get them back. Being pretty much a rookie myself, I would appreciate any help.
