You should have a PCMCIA slot for an Ethernet card.
Before you go that route, open Device Manager and look in the USB section for a "generic USB hub". In it's properties, look for a switch that allows Windows to disable it for power savings. Disable it if you find one.

: have one of those horrible combinations - ALi chipset running on a laptop, and using Alcatel ADSL modem.
: Windows 98SE, Pentium 3 450Mhz.
: after the first installation of the modem, i encountered error#650.that gets momentarily solved if i plug out the modem, restart and plug it back in. but then i cant surf the net for more than 10mins. just get the error message "page cannot be displayed".
: did a couple of suggestions in the USBMan tips like updating my BIOS, installing new drivers from Alcatel , cleaning up device manager in Safe mode, changing ALi USB Host Controller to Standard OHCI USB Host Controller, etc..and managed to surf for 50 mins ( longest in 3 months ). then the fateful error "page cannot be displayed"again.
: as im troubleshooting this modem problem, i am not connecting any other USB devices to my laptop ( i have a Belkin USB Hub,and a multi-function printer )
: read about some suggestions like getting a card, but dont think it's possible for a laptop.
: please advise. caught in a inflexible laptop situation, and a 1year contract with BT.
: thanks.
