You don't need to use a USB DSL modem. Ethernet is always an option.
Unplug all USB devices and remove all USB software. Run the WinXP "repair:

: V2.44 does not fix the problem.
: But I checked again in the "Latest via News" of this website the remarks regarding USB 1.1 filter patch.
: This filter patch is supposed to fix exactly my problem as mentionned in the readme file :
: "Adds support for Windows XP.
: Fix the issue where USB devices will be reenumerated when system resumes from Standby mode."
: But after installing it, it is supposed to appear in
: the
: "My Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\USB\ROOT_HUB\?
: &????????&?" section a "LowerFilters" item that is the proof of the good installation.
: This item does not appear.
: Does it mean it is not properly installed or that
: it is not installed because other drivers like 2.44
: which have already the filter are installed ?
: Another remark : not far from this way in the registery, even if it is unplugged, I have many data of the EPSON scanner (but they are difficult to understand...)
: I begin to feel depressed with this scanner...
: I'd like to get a ADSL modem (of course USB) and
: I am afraid to have the same problem.
