Windows Me USB Guide

[ACPI] [Boot CD] [Drivers] [Troubleshooting] [Upgrading]

Upgrading to Win Me

For best results, I recommend a clean install of the new operating system to a new or newly formatted hard drive.  Remove all out of box peripherals and PCI cards except for video. If your keyboard and mouse are PS/2 capable, install them in PS/2 mode, (you can remove in Safe Mode and install them in USB mode after the OS is installed correctly).   Install PCI cards such as sound NIC and modem one at a time after the OS is installed.  Monitor IRQ assignments after every device installation to avoid conflicts.  Install out of box peripherals including USB devices last.

If you choose to update to WinMe from Win98 or Win95 you MUST first disconnect and uninstall all USB devices except for the keyboard and/or mouse.

Upgrading from WinME to Win2000 is NOT Supported

Make a BOOT Disk with CDROM Support

Download the boot disk image and click on the program file to extract to a floppy

Removing ACPI

ACPI active can be the source of problems in Win ME.  Windows ME automatically installs in ACPI mode if an ACPI BIOS is detected.  Unfortunately, Win ME does NOT handle ACPI very well and IRQ sharing with this OS is problematic.  If USB is sharing its IRQ with IRQ Holder for ACPI Steering and several other devices you will need to install the OS in APM mode as outlined below.

  • Reinstall Windows by starting the system using the boot floppy with CDROM support.

  • From the A:\ prompt start Windows from the CDROM

  • D:\setup /p i when D:\ is the drive letter of the floppy.

  • If your hard drive is running from a High Point, Promise or ATA 66 or 100 controller, the drive will not be recognized at bootup and you will need to come back a letter.

  • A clean reinstall is recommended

Drivers

Windows Me is the last version of the Win98 Operating System.  Many Win98SE peripheral drivers will work on systems running the Me operating system, some will not.  If you are experiencing problems with a USB device that requires non-native drivers, check with the manufacturer for a WinMe version of the software and drivers.

WinMe System Files Needed for Some Devices

Download  the file(s) to a Floppy Disk and point the Hardware Wizard to look in A:\ when prompted.  These files are located, in compressed form, on your WinMe CD in Win9x/BASE2  For WinMe ONLY
